KEEPING YOUR DOG AT AN IDEAL WEIGHT WILL IMPROVE HIS HEALTH
In most cases, weight management for dogs is decidedly easier than it is for people to control their own weights, especially weight loss for dogs. Gaining weight for a dog can be a little more challenging.
In this series of articles I cover both weight gain for dogs and weight loss for dogs. I'll give you tips on both losing and gaining weight that I use on my own dogs in my pitbull kennel. You will note that I have divided the articles into two pages. On this page we talk about weight loss and the next page we discuss weight gain for dogs.
Really, helping a dog to lose weight is not rocket science, nor is it near as difficult for a dog to lose weight as it is for people to lose weight. To loose weight yourself, you have to fight cravings. You have to avoid the urge to double size at McDonald, order large Pizzas, stop by the Dairy Queen, and the late night snacks before bed time. Believe me, your dog has no such urge! So stop believing that he does, just because you do. With your dog, it is a very simple matter of picking out a nutritious food formulated for your dog's age group, and then, this is the key; measuring or weighing out the portions. Do this is, and you will have your dog at the appropriate weight in no time. Follow my advice and help your dog lose weight fast!
FOLLOW THIS PLAN TO HELP YOUR DOG LOSE WEIGHT
FEED ONCE A DAY! Just because you need to eat three or four times a day does not mean your dog needs to. Feeding your dog once a day is actually better for him (or her). Pick a time to feed your dog when a half hour after feeding you can walk and exercise the dog. A dog's digestive system is very short in comparison to a humans. Thirty minutes after eating, with a little exercise the dog is ready to go. Feeding the dog before bedtime is a huge mistake. Feed once a day and then exercise your dog after eating and your dog will lose weight.
My experience is that most dogs that need to be on a weight loss routine are older dogs. The dog needs to lose weight because the owner continues to feed the same food in the same portion, as when the dog was young and more active. In the older years, a dog becomes less active, burns less calories and gains weight. To help a dog with weight loss, Change to a food appropriate to his or her age and cut back on the portions slightly. Buy a Gram Scale and weigh out the portions.
YOU MAY HAVE TO TREAT YOUR DOG FOR JOINT PAIN SO THEY CAN LOSE WEIGHT
Oftentimes, a dog is less active, not because of age, but because of a easily treated health condition, that goes untreated. I cannot believe how many dogs I have seen that limp around with arthritis or other joint problems that can be easily fixed with the right vitamins and supplements. I've noted this with my own dogs. I've had dogs quit all their former exercise activities that they used to love and just stand and watch as the other dogs have all the fun. Then I introduce them to the right supplement and in some cases, just a matter of a few days or weeks, they or chasing down the ball like Derek Jeter.
I BELIEVE THESE ARE THE BEST WEIGHT LOSS DOG FOOD FORMULAS
I have spent a considerable amount of time analyzing the best dog food that would help my dogs with weight loss. Frankly, although there is literally over a thousand different dog foods you can purchase, there is very few quality weight loss formulas for dogs. First and foremost, I will not feed any of my dogs a dog food with grain (see my page on BEST DOG FOOD). So finding a quality weight loss dog formula that does not have grain, sadly, was not easy.
My first choice is Wellness CORE Grain Free Reduced Fat Turkey & Chicken Natural Dry Dog Food, 26-Pound Bag The Wellness Line of Grain Free dog food is one of my favorites and the reduced fat recipe does not disappoint, and is perfect for dogs that need to lose weight. The Grain-Free Reduced Fat recipe is specially formulated for dogs that are less active and need a good weight loss formula. It contains 25% less fat then the other Wellness Core products, and it also contains more fiber to help the dog feel fuller longer. The quality of course, is excellent as with all Wellness Core Grain-Free products. Too, I like the fact that it also contains a good Probiotic and therefore dogs trying to lose weight on this formula, usually have very good stools.
Pro-Treat Beef Liver, Freeze Dried Dog Treats They contain tons of protein, very little fat, and even less carbs, and the dogs love them. If you look at the price per pound you are going to be misled. Remember when comparing; meat contains around 80% water by weight. When you buy a steak that is $10 per pound, you are actually paying $80 per pound if all the water were removed. Cooked meat is around 67% water. Freeze Dried has almost no water content and therefore the cost per pound is not what it appears (hope that makes sense).
READ MY PAGES ON DOG FOOD
If for some reason, Wellness Core did not agree with my dog, then I would choose one of the dog foods I recommend on my BEST DOG FOOD page. If you are not used to feeding a quality dog food and are feeding terrible quality food such as Science Diet, you may think that Wellness is expensive. The reality is, that with all the fillers of the cheaper priced foods, it really does not cost more to feed Wellness Core. Do not be fooled into thinking you need to go with some vegetarian formula for your dog to lose weight, that some promote. Dog's are Carnivores, they are not vegetable eaters. Anyone that tries to tell you that dogs need vegetables to lose weight has absolutely no clue!
When I give my dogs treats, I want the treats to be healthy. Thankfully, dogs like Liver, about as much as I like Apple Pie A La Mode! A treat that my dogs love is
