KEEPING YOUR DOG AT AN IDEAL WEIGHT WILL IMPROVE THEIR HEALTHIn most cases, weight management for a dog is decidedly easier than it is for people. I've yet to see a dog order a pizza. Helping our canine friend loose a few pounds, is very simple.
Gaining weight however, can be a little more challenging.
In this article I cover both weight gain and weight loss. I'll give you tips on both, as well as what I do in my kennel that works.
HERE IS HOW TO HELP YOUR DOG LOSE WEIGHTReally, helping our pet to lose weight is not rocket science, nor is it near as difficult for them to lose weight as it is for people to lose weight. To loose weight yourself, you have to fight cravings. You have to avoid the urge to double size at McDonald's, order large Pizzas, stop by the Dairy Queen, and the late night snacks before bed time. Believe me, your dog has no such urge! So stop believing that he does, just because you do.
It is simply a matter of picking out a nutritious food formulated for your dog's age group, and then, this is the key; measuring or weighing out the portions. Do this, and you will have your canine friend at the appropriate weight in no time.
WEIGH OUT THE PORTIONSMy experience is; most dogs that need to be on a weight loss routine are older dogs. They needs to lose weight because the owner continues to feed the same food in the same portion, as when they were young and more active. In the older years, they becomes less active, burn less calories and starts putting on the pounds. To help them lose weight, change to a food appropriate to his or her age and cut back on the portions slightly. Buy a Gram Scale and weigh out the portions. INEXPENSIVE GRAM SCALE
I BELIEVE THESE ARE THE BEST WEIGHT LOSS FOOD FORMULASI have spent a considerable amount of time analyzing the best food that would help my dogs with weight loss. Frankly, although there is literally over a thousand different dog foods you can purchase, there is very few quality weight loss formulas for dogs.
First and foremost, I will not feed any of my dogs a food with grain (see my page on BEST DOG FOOD). So finding a quality weight loss formula that does not have grain, sadly, was not easy.
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT FOOD FOR LOSING WEIGHTMy first choice is: Wellness CORE Grain Free Reduced Fat Turkey & Chicken The Wellness Line of Grain Free food is one of my favorites and the reduced fat recipe does not disappoint, and is perfect for those who need to lose weight. The Grain-Free Reduced Fat recipe is specially formulated for those who are less active and therefore in need a good weight loss formula. It contains 25% less fat then the other Wellness Core products, and it also contains more fiber to help them feel fuller longer.
The quality of course, is excellent as with all Wellness Core Grain-Free products. Too, I like the fact that it also contains a good Pro-biotic and therefore dogs trying to lose weight on this formula, usually have very good stools.
YOUR DOG WILL LOVE THESE HEALTY DIET TREATSWhen I give my dogs treats, I want the treats to be healthy. Thankfully, dogs like Liver about as much as I like Apple Pie A La Mode! A treat that my dogs love is these freeze dried treats: Pro-Treat Beef Liver, Freeze Dried Treats These liver freezed dried treats contain tons of protein, very little fat, and even less carbs, and the dogs love them. Now, if you look at the price per pound you are going to be misled. Remember when comparing; meat contains around 80% water by weight. When you buy a steak that is $10 per pound, you are actually paying $80 per pound if all the water were removed. Cooked meat (believe it or not) is around 67% water. Meat that has been Freeze Dried has almost no water content, and therefore the cost per pound is not what it appears (hope that makes sense).
USE SOUND JUDGEMENT IF DESIRING TO PACK POUNDS ON YOUR DOGI get several dozen emails everyday; a fair portion of them are from folks seeking advice on how to help their dog gain weight. Frankly, in most of these cases the dog does not need to gain weight. People look at my dogs and get to thinking their dogs are skinny and thus in need of putting on some pounds.
The fact is, my dogs are specially bred to be thicker and heavier and have the skeletal frame capable of carrying the extra weight.
Most do not need to gain weight as they do not have the bone structure or cartilage that can support the weight gain.
CAREFULLY CONSIDER IF YOUR DOG NEEDS TO GAIN WEIGHTIn many cases, weight gain can be damaging. The bone structure simply is not there to support a weight gain of even 10 pounds. Carrying the extra weight, will in these cases cause excessive stress resulting in wear and tear on joints and cartridge, and over the course of time do significant damage. Yet, if you still want your dog to gain weight, continue reading as I outline the food and supplements needed.
THE PRICE MAY SEEM HIGH BUT IT IS ACTUALLY CHEAPERRemember, cheaper priced dog food may seem less expensive, but they all are full of useless fillers that are simply added in an effort to deceive an unsuspecting public. These fillers have no nutritional value, and pass through the intestines unabsorbed.
With a high quality food, your dog will eat less and there will be less stool to clean up. Because your dog is not filling up on useless fillers, your dog will eat more of what counts and thus will gain weight.
WEIGHT GAIN SUPPLEMENTS THAT WORK!Nutri-Cal is a supplement that has been popular for years with those who want their dog to gain weight. It is very rich and needs to be used sparingly otherwise it can cause your dog to have the runs. But dogs love it, and it will most certainly help your dog gain weight. Meg-A-Cal is a very similar product to Nutri-cal, both are high calorie supplements, but here you can buy it by the gallon. I would buy the one that has the best price.
